About Evinrude's 1911 Outboard Motor Patent

It’s the early 1900s, and a young Norwegian-American named Ole Evinrude decides he’s had enough of rowing a boat like a Viking on a scenic fjord. Instead, he thinks, “Why not let a motor do the heavy lifting?” And so, on August 22, 1911, Ole’s outboard motor patent became official—forever changing how we zip around on our favorite lakes and rivers. The 1911 motor shown here was later called model 1502. It was 1.5 horsepower; a 62 pound iron engine. The motor was a two-cycle internal combustion engine, running at 1000 revolutions per minute.
